We have had another look in the head race especially the control gate which hasn’t been closing properly. After cleaning some silt out of the mechanism it now shuts better. The wall of the mill beside the headrace has obviously leaked from historical times, with a drain being built on the inside to take the water away. Recently the amount of water passing through the wall has increased. Examination of the outside shows that although the sandstones are very tightly set together (ashlar) some of the pointing has worn away. This has been replaced and hopefully this will reduce the amount of water passing through into the mill.
